Implant Crown Retention Types
Implant crowns can be connected to dental implants using different methods, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. We offer three main types: cement-retained, screw-retained, and hybrid crowns.
Cement-Retained Crowns
Cement-retained crowns are fixed onto an implant using dental cement. A small abutment is first attached to the implant, and then the crown is cemented onto this abutment.
Advantages
- Aesthetics: More natural-looking restoration with no visible screws or connectors
- Flexibility in Design: Complex contours and aesthetics not constrained by screw access holes
- Ease of Adjustment: Crown can be removed and replaced with relative ease
Disadvantages
- Cement Remnants: Excess cement can cause gum irritation or inflammation
- Removal Difficulty: Challenging to remove without damaging crown or implant
- Potential for Loosening: Cement can degrade over time, leading to loosening
Screw-Retained Crowns
Screw-retained crowns are attached to the implant using a screw accessible through a hole in the crown. The screw secures the crown directly to the implant abutment.
Advantages
- Ease of Removal: Easy removal and replacement through screw access hole
- No Cement Issues: Eliminates risk of excess cement complications
- Secure Fit: Minimizes risk of crown loosening compared to cement-retained
Disadvantages
- Aesthetic Compromise: Screw access hole may be visible, especially anteriorly
- Screw Loosening: Screw can loosen over time, requiring periodic maintenance
- Complexity: More complex to fabricate and fit properly
Hybrid Crowns
Hybrid crowns combine features of both cement-retained and screw-retained crowns. They typically use a screw-retained abutment with a cemented crown on top.
Advantages
- Aesthetic Flexibility: Cemented crown allows aesthetic adjustments with easy removal
- Stability and Function: Secure fit with option for easy removal and replacement
Disadvantages
- Complexity: More complex to fabricate, requires careful planning
- Cost: Typically more expensive due to dual-component system
